BlackBerry Reports Fourth Quarter and Year-End Results for Fiscal 2013

Just an hour ago, BlackBerry announced their fiscal results and I must say, it looks pretty good. Despite the bashing it has suffered for the past year, it is now a much leaner power house and it is taking the waves well. In fact, this is a testament that the US market is not everything.

Overall, the news coming out is very positive:

  • 1 million Z10 sold (Note: It was UK-exclusive for quite sometime and this included a small share of Asian market only)
  • Revenue was $2.7 billion ($2.8 billion was expected)
  • Gross Margins stands at 40%
  • Despite all that advertising glamor poured in, they still have 2.9 Billion dollars.
  • Well, despite 1 year plus plus in the wild, the playbook still sold – 370, 000 devices. Not a big amount though.
  • 5 Million legacy devices sold. Which, is an healthy figure.
  • Returned to an operating profit in the 4th Quarter
  • 70% of apps in BB World are Native
  • 55% of Z10 owners are coming form other platforms. The question is, are they using only ONE device? That is a tough question.
  • 31 petabytes of traffic through BB infrastructure every month.
  • Starting off with 2.1 Billion, they now have 2.9 Billion
  • Q10 first lab entry was Late Feb, will be available starting April as telcos approve it.
  • Production of z10 was increased in latter portion of the quarter
  • Lower cost (curve type – lower end) devices are coming soon
  • This is NOT a 1 or 2 quarter game.  This is a 5 to 10 year game. Hence, this is the START.
  • Marketing is going to increase by a further 50% in the coming weeks/months
  • Z10 was a tougher product to sell according to Thor, hence, with Z10 setting the benchmark that high, it is expected that Q10 outperform the Z10.
  • Also, they decided to start with the tougher product, hence, Z10 was pushed first!

Negative:

  • The overall subscriber base they listed below has dropped to 76 Million. Did this mean ONLY legacy devices? (Note: The loss in subscribers is mostly coming from the pre-paid market, not Enterprise)

Overall, this is a very solid earnings report and call. BlackBerry has really shown that it has grown, as a whole, as a company together. Noting that the Z10 is not even launched completely globally, and that Q10 is hot on their heels, the next quarter would be extremely exciting to look at.

What do you think of the results? How will the anal-ysts process this?
