Maximize Battery Life On The BlackBerry 10 (In-Depth)

How much battery one consumes vary’s as per their usage. With a drastic change away from Java-based devices and usage of QNX, the BlackBerry 10 now uses the largest capacity battery used for BlackBerry devices, but again, we have to account for the additional power consumption for the extra processing power given to us. With the latest update, we have already seen a major bump to the battery life and can we go further with that? Perhaps, yes.Earlier, we posted the top 10 tips for maximizing the juice from the BlackBerry 10 device. But, that said, BlackBerry actually published an article to help users to extend the battery life further with smart tweaks to the user settings. Some are the same as the top 10, but there are more to this list now.

General

  1. Check for BlackBerry 10 OS Updates – Whenever a new BlackBerry 10 OS update is released, make sure to install it on the BlackBerry 10 smartphone so that you can take advantage of any available optimizations which can help improve your battery life. Typically, you’ll receive a notification of a new update, but to check for updates manually, open Settings, tap Software Updates followed by Check for Updates.
  2. Charging – Always use an official BlackBerry charger. BlackBerry 10 devices require at least a 750mA charger to consistently charge the device. Chargers supplying less than 750mA may not provide enough power to sustain a charge on the device during heavy use. All BlackBerry branded chargers will print the amperage somewhere on the charger. Ensure the charger displays at least an amperage of 750mA. When using a charger, charge for an extended period of time when possible, avoid charging in small increments (i.e. less than 15 minutes), and do not your leave smartphone in direct sunlight (i.e. your vehicle’s dashboard) or in extremely cold temperatures. (In short, in normal room temperatures)
  3. Use a Case or Holster – Depending on which of type case or holster used, putting the BlackBerry 10 smartphone in it may or may not turn off the display. On top of protecting your smartphone, using a case that turns off the display is a great way to save battery life. Most of the ORIGINAL BlackBerry accessories that can be purchased from us will be able to use the Power-Saving Technology built into the the cases (mainly those which covers the screen).

Application Management

  1. Multitasking – As applications run, they continue to consume CPU processing power, hence, consuming battery power. Consider closing any running applications that are not being actively used. Applications can be closed from the Active Frames panel by tapping on the X in the lower right corner of the Active Frames.
  2. Review Application and Game Refresh Settings – It’s a good idea to review the refresh settings within your favorite third-party apps and games, as some of them might maintain active connections to services or data that is still being transferred.
  3. Graphic intensive applications – Graphic intensive games or applications may increase battery consumption. When devoting time to intensive applications such as these, consider keeping the device plugged into a charger while doing so.
  4. Camera Flash – The Flash feature of the camera will consume battery when used. To minimize use of battery, consider turning off the flash feature of the camera when it is not needed.

Wireless Connections

  1. Disable Wireless Radios when not in use – BlackBerry smartphones feature multiple wireless radios Cellular, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, and NFC connections. If one or more of these wireless connections is not being used, it is recommended to disable the corresponding radio to prevent it from using battery power. For example, if it is known that no connection will be made to any Bluetooth devices while at home or at a restaurant, a quick way to save some battery life would be to turn off the Bluetooth radio. To review and modify network connections on a BlackBerry 10 smartphone, swipe down from the top bezel, tap on the Settings icon, and select Network Connections. Enabling and disabling the network connections can be done through each of the Connections listed on this screen.
  2. Low Cellular Coverage situations (Bad Reception)– When in low cellular coverage situations, the BlackBerry smartphone may increase (Radio) power to the Cellular radio. In locations that have poor cell coverage such as basements, use the Wi-Fi functionality built into the BlackBerry smartphone to connect to available Wi-Fi network. If a cellular connection is not needed while in the low coverage environment, consider turning off the Mobile Network connection. To review and modify network connections on a BlackBerry 10 smartphone, swipe down from the top bezel, tap on the Settings icon, and select Network Connections. Enabling and disabling the network connections can be done through each of the Connections listed on this screen.
  3. No Coverage situations (SOS Mode) – When in an area without cellular coverage, the BlackBerry smartphone may continue to search for available mobile networks. In locations that have no mobile network coverage such as basements, use the Wi-Fi functionality built into the BlackBerry smartphone to connect to available Wi-Fi network.

Device Settings

  1. Accounts – If multiple accounts that support email, contacts, and calendar synchronization, have been setup, try to only enable synchronization for the accounts intended to be actively used; this will ensure that any activity that occurs is necessary. To review account synchronization settings, tap Accounts within Settings followed by tapping the account you want to customize and/or delete. If there are accounts that are not actively used have been added, consider removing these accounts to reduce overhead and to prevent them from using the battery to stay updated.
  2. Adjust Screen Brightness – An easy way to see improved battery life is to customize the backlighting settings on a BlackBerry smartphone. As the BlackBerry display brightens, more power is consumed. Within Settings, tap Display and move the Brightness slider to a reduced setting that you find comfortable.
  3. Screen Lock Timeout – In addition to using the Power/Lock key to lock your screen, an important setting that to customize is the Screen Lock Timeout. This setting controls how long the BlackBerry 10 smartphone will wait before turning off the screen after being left idle. The less time that the screen is on, the more battery is conserved. To adjust this value, go to Settings, tap Display and change the Screen Lock Timeout.
  4. Reduce the device Volume – As with most speakers, he speaker of the BlackBerry 10 smartphone will use more power the louder it is turned up. Turn down the device volume with the volume keys on the right side of your device when a higher volume is not needed. To adjust other volume settings on the BlackBerry 10 smartphone, swipe down from the top bezel, tap on the Settings icon, and select System Volume or Notifications.
  5. Configure a Power Efficient Notification Profile – The speaker and vibration components of the BlackBerry consume energy when used. Consider configuring an energy efficient notification profile that minimizes use of these components by shortening the length of the notification as well as minimizing the number of times that the notification is produced. The vibration notification requires more power than other notification types, eliminating this notification type all together for an energy efficient notification profile, is a way to maximise battery performance. The LED light on the BlackBerry uses the least amount of energy, so for notification types where this form of notification is sufficient consider using it exclusively. If you receive a lot of notifications overnight as well, swipe down from the top of the screen after locking your smartphone to enable Bedside Mode, which will turn off all notifications overnight.
