MicroSD just got larger – Microdia announces world’s first 512GB microSD card

Microdia’s 512GB microSD card

After SanDisk released their 200GB microSD earlier this year, was it the peak for microSD card’s for this year? No it wasn’t. Earlier this week at Computex, Microdia, a California-based company that makes flash memory and accessories had a 512GB microSD card.

Whilst microSDXC provides the framework for up to 2TB worth of memory to be squeezed into the card, 512GB is still currently the largest available in the market. Going on sale just next month (July) with a price tag of about USD$1,000, the Xtra Elite is definitely not cheap.

However, it is worth nothing that the Microdia’s Xtra Elite will use version 4.0 of the Secure Digital standard, and feature an Ultra High Speed (UHS) bus with data transfer rates of up to 300MBps. And, because it’s using SD 4.0, the card features an additional row of pins below the standard ones, which also means that most of our devices, phones will not be able to utilize this speedy speed and would only use the standard UHS speed.

Whether or not this is worth while to buy, I will leave it to you to decide!
