So now, it seems like WhatsApp, has gotten into a bit of trouble with the Canadian and Dutch governments. It seems that the way in which WhatsApp asks for access to all your contacts is in violation of these countries privacy laws. The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada (OPC) and the Dutch Data Protection Authority claim that the way in which WhatsApp requires users to allow full access to their contacts, both users and non-users, goes against privacy laws.
“This lack of choice contravenes (Canadian and Dutch) privacy law. Both users and non-users should have control over their personal data and users must be able to freely decide what contact details they wish to share with WhatsApp,” said Jacob Kohnstamm, chairman of the Dutch Data Protection Authority.
Whilst the Whatsapp team have been wishy washy on their words for a native BlackBerry 10 app, this, for now, will definitely cause some stirs around.
