Fred Perry 60th Anniversary Party
Venue: Tanjong Pagar Railway Station
Date:
Sunday, 2nd December 2012
Time: 1600 – 2300 hrs
Highlights: Exclusive premiere screening of Don Letts’ Subculture with music performances from CITIZENS!, MUON, The Fast Colours feat. X’Ho, Obedient Wives Club, Poptart and The Great Spy Experiment.

In the late 1940s, footballer Tibby Wegner approached three-time Wimbledon champion Fred Perry with a business plan, proposing to market lighter, softer and more comfortable sweatbands under his name. This was during a time when sportswear was, more often than not, crafted with confining and heavy materials, and naturally the idea took off. But the story of perhaps one of the world’s most iconic brands truly began under a decade later; in August 1952, Fred Perry launched the first in his now world-famous line of tennis shirts – and the rest, as they say, is history.

Associated with a multitude of British youth subcultures in its six decades of existence, Fred Perry has grown from being the pride of a nation to a worldwide phenomenon that champions solidarity and independence – perhaps the reason why a fashion label could so fast became synonymous with the music scene as well. True to their dedication to subcultures rooted deeply in music, Fred Perry Subculture’s Sub-Sonic Live parties have brought some of the best in underground music together in series of unique events.

The Singapore edition of Sub-Sonic Live celebrated its second instalment on our sunny shores back in August, and come December the scales are set to be thrown off-balance as they honor Fred Perry’s 60th Anniversary as a clothing label. Past editions have included breakthrough homegrown bands like MONSTER CAT, Pleasantry and The Sets Band, bringing these bright talents to the forefront of the Singaporean music scene.

This time around, the Fred Perry 60th Anniversary Party will be headlined by one of the most interesting acts to emerge from England in recent times, Citizens! Signed to the hip French fashion/music label Kitsuné, Citizens! released their debut album Here We Are back in May this year to positive reception. Tapping into musical elements that have hardly been experimented with, the band is no stranger to breaching new ground as they deliver catchy, well constructed pop music completed with an inventive and soulful punch.

The party will also include the likes of experimental trip-hop inspired MUON, veterans The Fast Colours feat. X’Ho, Obedient Wives Club, The Great Spy Experiment and underground favourites Poptart. Wrapping up the major festivities in celebration of six decades of excellence will be the exclusive premiere screening of Subculture, the latest effort from the director of influential music film, The Punk Rock Movie, Don Letts.

The party will also include a curated street market with a diverse selection of over 15 stores, as well as a back lane boasting traditional carnival games approached with classical British style – and to make things better, participants stand a chance to win attractive prizes including Blackberry Bold 9900 handsets. We at Poached Mag have been among the lucky ones who’ve caught Fred Perry Subculture’s spectacular celebration of music in the past, and if that’s anything to go by, their 60th Anniversary Party will be nothing short of magnificent.

We’ve said this before and we’ll say it again – Fred Perry knows how to throw a party, and knows how to throw it well. Mark your calendars if you haven’t already, because we sure have!
