7 Million BlackBerry Devices Sold in 2014

Well, it is the new year now, but it seems like we have been missing some key figures from the past year. Accounting for the period between December 1 2013 and 29 November 2014, BlackBerry has shipped 7 million smartphones. Is this any good?

Well, as pointed out in N4BB, John Chen did make this statement in June last year:

If we ship 10 million phones in a year, we’ll be profitable on phones.

Breaking it down:

Q4 FY 2014 December 1st, 2013 – March 1st, 2014: 1.3 million smartphones shipped
Q1 FY 2015 March 2nd – May 31st, 2014: 1.6 million smartphones shipped.
Q2 FY 2015 June 1st – August 30th, 2014: 2.1 million smartphones shipped.
Q3 FY 2015 September 1st – November 29th, 2014: 2 million smartphones shipped.

Well, if we account for the amount that BlackBerry sold when John Chen was at helm:

Q1 FY 2015 March 2nd – May 31st, 2014: 1.6 million smartphones shipped.
Q2 FY 2015 June 1st – August 30th, 2014: 2.1 million smartphones shipped.
Q3 FY 2015 September 1st – November 29th, 2014: 2 million smartphones shipped.

That is about 5.7 million devices for 3/4 of the year. So if this quarter, BlackBerry manages to sell 4.3 million devices or more, it should be pretty much on track onto John Chen’s vision?

Nonetheless, BlackBerry is still planning to unveil part of its portfolio at Mobile World Congress in March, which will give us a glimpse at some new, concept devices. We will probably see more Foxconn made devices in the road map, but hopefully, more proper non-Foxconn devices as well.
