what’s with the media?

Even if you love RIM or hate RIM, hoping quietly for them to fail is just plain insane epeceially when you consider all that goes with them. Unfortunately, it seems like the negative impression is growing in this plain world and no matter what is being done, negativity outweighs positivity. Well, of course I’m not saying that we don’t do that naturally, but with so many pluses showing, why is the minus still so strong? It is a fact, with all honesty, that there are so many people thinking of RIM as a Canadian company and going: “Ah, they suck — they should just close down. Stupid Canadian company anyway”. It is just like brainwash by the media and analyst’s alike whom have taken a habit for scolding RIM for just about whatever is done, right or wrong, good or bad. But take a closer look at this bashers – their company do rely on BlackBerry devices. But its not these people whom are using. Its the “core” or the essential portion of the company who’s using it.

It is rather safe to say that when RIM ceases to exist, you realize yourself, brother, cousin, sister whatever no longer has a job. RIM isn’t a Canadian company, they’re a Global company and employ people all over the world. Don’t forget, even their main production plants are not inline with the Global Triad trend for Thailand or China. Its in Turkey, its in Mexico, even Canada has it. China has a big reason not to use Berry’s. Point taken – Apple hires more people in China than elsewhere.

But let us think – how did most people communicate during 9/11? How did people in Haiti post their locations so that rescuers could find them? How did corporates keep their secrets within themselves? RIM is more then just smartphones, they are an integration for our (business) cultures alike. Indeed, most of these functions can be done, replicated by our giant competitors but do they offer us the same performance? RIM introduced quality, communications to us. Now, our modern life requires these communications but it is yet again revolutionized by our competitors with the user friendly UI and etc.

In all due respect, these UI are indeed beautiful. Usability wise, it depends quite much on the user indeed. I have tried an iphone, an android and of course, the berries, but for myself, berry is simple to use. Tried asking common folks who were still on the “dinosaur” age devices to try it out, the berry was indeed very user-friendly. But the boring look of both the software and hardware turned many away. I have plenty of friends complaining that their android is cranky (definitely a hardware issue) and user interface requiring some adaptations to it.

Now, why won’t everyone just sit down and play with the devices and decide again?

Now, we address the issues pointed out by the Media whom have been brain washing the general public:
1) RIM has a lack of apps
– I have to admit this fact. Yes we lack in app numbers. But do we need 100’s or 1000’s apps that do the exact same task? Some choices are good, but so many?
Games, is one area we are indeed lacking behind which an average consumer might take offence at.
2) BlackBerry’s look boring
– With all honesty, yes, many devices look boring but the new one, its pretty sleek. Now, look at the way it is marketed at first. Somehow, our ad’s do not match the likes of the competitors which actually do make us look dull. Many do agree the new devices are rather cool actually and is beautifully made, but more do not even know thee existence of such devices!
3) RIM is hopeless – slow in adaptation to the changes.
– will slow and steady win the race? RIM has been making steady progress in the adaptations and we do see a lot of promise. But, delays will indeed touch everyone’s nerves but if they do perfect it well, I really don’t mind the delay. However, will the consumer mind?

Now, with the rumoured os2 “gold” release coming, perhaps this will be the magic to cast the dark clouds away and let the sun shine on the once glorious black fruit.
