If you’re looking for a detailed on-device map of Singapore, you’d be better off looking elsewhere.

Created by Skylabs Mobilesystems Ltd, this application retails on Appworld for Playbook for S$10.25. Size of the application is around 64mb. I decided to try it out because it seemed to get a consistently high rating for its other applications.

Firing up the application we’re told no cached tiles are found and asked if we want to initialize the cache map data, just hit yes.

Swipe down the menubar and we get a few items that we’re allowed to set. Nothing much to do here.

Now the app is able to give you some level of detail out of the box but that’s about it. If we actually tried zooming in further, we’d get hit by a blur. Up till now, I’ve left my wifi off to test how much of an “Offline Map” this is.

Turning on the Wifi and restarting the application I was able to get a pretty good level of detail though. Apparently what this map does is that it caches whatever map tiles that you browse across. You can then view the cached tiles offline. Simply put, if you wanna see it offline, you’d have to see it online first. Now, if you’ve actually used this application long enough, you’d probably be able to get a decent amount of offline map data for use, but otherwise, you’re pretty much screwed.

A simple search feature was also not available, making it a very, very useless app for S$10.25. A better alternative would be to use the free MapApp.

Now, remember earlier on I mentioned about the high ratings for the application and its other sister applications. Turns out that a lot of high ratings were given by this one person called kozen. I put in a 1/2 star rating for the app but it mysteriously disappeared the next day.

 

Conclusion:

Don’t buy it.
