No we have not forgot about appnesday at all. We missed a few weeks of appnesday but hey we are back! I know many of you have missed this!

On the side note, our BlackBerry application is now not only available for all legacy devices, and new BlackBerry 10 devices INCLUDING BlackBerry Q10!
Our application can be downloaded from BlackBerry World for Free today!

First on the list is Taxi Booking (for Comfort and City Cab).

Now we do not need to waste our precious SMS or Outgoing calls just to get a taxi. The native application allows you to book, track your booking status and add favourites to do speed booking! Now available for free from BlackBerry World!

Are you a frequent traveler or have a family member or close friend that travels often? The iChangi application is now officially available on the BlackBerry World!

Available as a android port, it works fine as the sideloaded one, but hey, there’s no need for sideloading now!

Now, here’s one paid premium application. VideoFX by Toysoft is a powerful video editor/recording software. It allows you to not only record videos, it allows you to add, change effects/filters on the fly! Working best with OS10.1, it works fine still, on the current OS10.

Available for S$2.50, if you are into videography, this needs your serious attention.

We may have mentioned the next one, but we felt there’s a need to rehighlight this application – Wikitude Places Beta.

Wikitude has been available on legacy devices, but whilst we don’t frequently use it, it is a rather fun application when we do use it!
Available now for free from the BlackBerry World today!

Now, this is one application a lot of people have been asking for – Skype.

Somehow, they are still labeling it at “Preview” and this is still a android port. Perhaps a native is coming soon? That’s for anyone’s guess. But as of now, available strictly to OS10.1 only, we may not be able to install it just yet, unless you hook up to one of the leaked OS’s.
Available on BlackBerry World now, for free!

Finally on the list this week is Endonomo, which has finally arrived on BlackBerry 10!

As one of the bigger fitness application available, the arrival of Endonomo means no more excuse not to work out! Use this application to monitor yourself.
Available for free in the BlackBerry world today.

Its been quite sometime since users on BlackBerry Platform have been lobbying for a Skype application. Now, it has been granted to us, on OS 10.1. However, a new report by Ars Technica now suggests that our Skype message’s are far from private: Microsoft is often dipping into your communications.

Together with security researcher Ashkan Soltani, Ars had sent fresh web links across Skype, and found that half of the urls were actually accessed by a machine with an IP address belonging to Microsoft as they were transmitted through the internet. This means that Skype messages are sent across the web in such a way that allows Microsoft to study whatever we write or send in plaintext, and clearly, its (reading or accessing this information) is a rather common affair.

Matt Green, a professor specialized in the field of encryption at Johns Hopkins University, had told Ars:

“The problem right now is that there’s a mismatch between the privacy people expect and what Microsoft is actually delivering. Even if Microsoft is only scanning links for ‘good’ purposes, say detecting malicious URLs, this indicates that they can intercept some of your text messages. And that means they could potentially intercept a lot more of them.”

It is not clear on how these text is scrutinized by Microsoft. Are whole messages being scanned on Microsoft servers? Or is it that the end-user Skype application sending snippets to be checked? Or was there something more to this whole experiment?

Now, we know Microsoft wants to keep an eye on how their services are being used, but this messages, being private for many legitimate users, I don’t recall looking at a clause allowing them to do so… This makes me wonder, how about video or voice communications?

Via Ars Technica

After the Media Party, finally the details we have been waiting for is released. The BlackBerry Q10 is now, available in Singapore as promised, starting 31 May. Together with that, the BlackBerry Z10 should be getting a bump to OS 10.1 as well. To add to the top of the icing, here we have some amazing BlackBerry Prizes right up for grabs, read on for details!

Introducing some official BlackBerry Q10 accessories, we may have told you earlier, but here is the live hands on pictures!

The BlackBerry SoftShell Cases:

The BlackBerry HardShell Cases:

The BlackBerry Leather Pocket kind of reminds me of the leather pocket for BlackBerry P9981:

Not forgetting the leather flip case… They fixed the LED issue since Z10!

And now, the BlackBerry Q10 itself! Coming in white and black, the two colours hold distinct differences from each other. Now, for the white, the screen is really white unlike the z10 whose screen’s bezel was black. The back of the device for the black now has a new Glass-weaven back whilst for the white, it is similar to that of the BlackBerry z10.

Comparing the back of Q10 to the back of Z10

Q vs Z

It was said because it is woven, if looked parallel with a light source, we can see specks of light, and look!

Of course, here’s an introduction to the BlackBerry Q10 features:

So, with its availability from 31 May, at a RRP of $898, the BlackBerry z10 will have a lowered RRP of $878 (down from $918).

At BlackBerry Live, Thorsten Heins unveiled their entry level product for the budget conscious, as well as emerging markets. The BlackBerry Q5.

I assume it is like half a Q10, that explains the 5. But the matter of fact is that it is almost as capable as a Q10 in my opinion. Obviously being a cheaper entry into BB10, you do lose some features. There is no HDMI out, non-removable battery (though leaks seems to suggest a 2180mah battery), a drop down to 5MP camera from 8MP, 8 GB of storage instead of 16GB, and LCD rather than the power saving AMOLED display on the Q10. No actual specs sheet that I can find just yet, but from hands-on done by other sites, they did not notice lag.

It comes in a variety of colours as well, with pink, red, white, and black.

I personally think it looks nice, though more colours would be nicer. It is a crucial piece of the puzzle to push up BB10 adoption numbers since a lot of the more popular BlackBerry devices has typically been Curves. Can’t wait to get a chance to play with it.

Anyone excited about the Q5?

Yes, I thought that before even beginning to try and cover the other news that came out of BlackBerry Live, I should talk about my mind being blown regarding news about BBM. And yes, I do think this news deserves 3 exclamation marks.

BlackBerry has announced that BBM will be going cross-platform! The app will launch in the summer for devices running iOS 6, and Android ICS and up. PLUS, it will be FREE. It will begin with the basics such as messaging and group chats. Eventually BlackBerry will provide feature parity across them bringing to the table Voice and Video calls, and as well as screen sharing while video calling.

This is a bold move, and BlackBerry knows it. BBM was known to many as the only reason they stuck with a BlackBerry device. Thorsten did said that they only chose to do that now, as they feel confident enough that they have a solid OS to compete in the market, BlackBerry 10. I do agree with this though, since my reasons for owning a BlackBerry has never been BBM.

For me, I see it as a plus point as I have no doubt in my mind that BBM is the best Instant Messaging client in the world. Its solid, its reliable, its secure. Another plus point is that users might see BBM as a great app, and gives them confident to try a BlackBerry Device again.

The dark side of this plan, is that they lose users whose reason was only BBM. How much of their current subscribers is in that base, I do not know. But I cannot imagine that it would be a huge number, as there are many other alternative cross-platform IM clients as well.

We can only pray, and hope for the best.

—

The next news about BBM, would be the beta launch of BBM Channels. This is basically a service that adds on to the BBM experience, by allowing BBM users to create channels for themselves, a brand, business or community. Think of it as BBM as a social network. You have the ability to create and share posts that can be shared with all of your channel subscribers.

A few companies are part of that beta program as well and already have channels we can follow, the obvious one being Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 Team. Users can download BBM Channels if they are part of BlackBerry Beta Zone. It is available for BBOS devices as well.

I think this is the logical way to evolve BBM. Making it more social than before. They already have an estimated 60 million users on BBM, so those users are all potential users of BBM Channels. This with the announcement of BBM on iOS and Android, will no doubt vastly increase the user base of BBM.

I am already in the process of installing the app on my BB10 device, an once I have a channel set up, be sure to follow me.

Wikitude Places beta for BB10 launched at BlackBerry Live in Orlando

ORLANDO 13 May 2013 – As BlackBerry goes “live” with its biggest annual event in Florida tomorrow, so does “Wikitude Places beta” for BlackBerry 10. Wikitude Places beta is the first preliminary release of the next generation of Wikitude on BlackBerry’s new BB10 platform. For the very first time, this beta version shows Wikitude’s whole new UI concept and the focus on location based services such as sights, restaurants and hotels in your vicinity. Contrary to Wikitude on older platforms, this new beta release for BB10 does not yet include the full augmented reality content portfolio and the integration of BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) functionalities.

“We have been working very hard to be able to launch this beta version for BlackBerry Live in Orlando and are happy to show our new UI concept on BB10 first. The Wikitude team is spinning the wheels to constantly add new features to satisfy our BlackBerry community’s expectations, especially the addition of the very popular BBM augmented reality service. So stay tuned, an app update is coming very soon”, says Martin Herdina, Wikitude’s CEO.

A few months ago Wikitude already launched the Wikitude SDK for BlackBerry 10, serving the BlackBerry developer community wishing to build their own augmented reality apps for the new BlackBerry 10 platform. The launch of Wikitude Places beta in BlackBerry World serves as yet another milestone to the commitment of supporting BlackBerry’s next generation operating system.

“We were one of the first to get behind the BlackBerry® 10 platform and we’re seeing results,” said Macadamian CEO Frédéric Boulanger who has dedicated a quarter of his company’s workforce to BlackBerry® 10 development. “Stellar user experiences drive business value for our clients and that’s been critical to our success.”

Macadamian’s 50+ person BlackBerry® 10 business unit has developed seven new apps in the past three months with more in its pipeline. Among these is Maxim’s first video-rich mobile app that’s now sizzling on BlackBerry® 10 smartphone screens. This free download has earned the coveted ‘Built for BlackBerry’ status and as of today, an impressive 4 ½-out-of-5-stars rating on the BlackBerry® World™ storefront.

“We were thrilled to work with Macadamian on our brand’s BlackBerry® 10 video-rich mobile app,” said Bill Shaw, Vice President, Digital, Maxim. “It looks terrific and expands our breadth across multiple platforms in order to reach Maxim fans whenever and wherever they consume content.”

In addition, BlackBerry recently commissioned Macadamian to create a new app that serves as a template for other developers to use for events. The app can enhance on-site event experiences through a virtual layer of real-time information targeted to any user’s geographic location. Real-time event updates, social posts from nearby event-goers and geo-location of performance stages and friends are some of its helpful features.

Macadamian has worked on many brand name applications, including ones that appear front and center in 15,000 retail outlets worldwide when consumers shop for a BlackBerry® 10 smartphone.

Coming up

Macadamian will also be presenting several conference sessions on developing and creating compelling user experiences for BlackBerry® 10 at the BlackBerry® Live™ event in Orlando, FL from May 14-16. For more information on the event or Macadamian’s sessions visit www.blackberrylive.com.

The SoftGel Case is another budget case offering that i-Blason offer’s for BlackBerry Z10 devices. After the Apache Series, here comes a slightly thicker competitor that offers a all round protection. The flexible case, covers almost the whole device, like the Poetic Atmosphere or Case Mate cases with a simpler design.

Like any other devices, TPU case is one of the cases that will be made available for it. Because, it is one simple case to make to protect one’s devices and everyone wants to protect their precious devices. However, each different brand, each different case comes with its own design and coverage. So here we have today, the i-Blason’s own version of the case.

First thing you will notice, is that like most of the other case offerings we have reviewed, again this comes with a raised bezel protectors which helps to reduce screen contact from surfaces. In addition, the full all round coverage is evident, with the sides, top and bottom all protected in it. Not forgetting is that the fact that the device sits snugly tight in the case, so despite being flexible, it does take a little effort to slip the device in or out of the case.

What many lower end cases lack of was the protection for the buttons. The case here wins a thumbs up for the inclusion of buttons on the case as well, although, love or hate the feeling is a totally different story. For the top, whilst the cut out for the earphone jack was slightly larger than that of the Poetic’s, it was still to small, in my opinion for a lot of speaker jacks. This makes listening music on some earphones or speakers a hassle as the case will need to be removed in order for the contacts to be made properly.

On the flip side, the cut outs for the speakers, charging and hdmi port were fine.

On the back, it is still protected. With a frost look, the BlackBerry Logo is almost hidden away.

All in all, priced at us$9.95 from i-Blason, this case could be well worth your consideration.

Just moments earlier, a BlackBerry Q10 Media Preview was held at Bedrock Bar and Grill to introduce this highly anticipated BlackBerry device into the Singapore market.

The BlackBerry Q10 will be the first physical keyboard device running the latest BlackBerry 10 operating system, joining its full touch screen sibling, the Z10, that was released in Singapore earlier this March. It will be shipping with the latest BlackBerry 10.1 OS out of the box, which brings all round improvements, as well as new features into the OS. The most notable feature in my opinion, are “Instant Actions“. As expected of a BlackBerry with a physical keyboard, keyboard shortcuts will be present in 10.1 as well.

BlackBerry Q10 will be available in Singapore towards the end of May. The recommended retail price of the device is set at S$898, sim-free.

Here is a quick overview of its specifications.
