UPDATE: BlackBerry NOT Considering To Exit Mobile Phone Market (BlackBerry Diversifying Revenue)

BlackBerry CEO, John Chen, said yesterday in an interview at New York that BlackBerry might quit the mobile phone market entirely if it continues to bleed money. In line with his plans to focus more on enterprise, qnx in other applications, this moves comes as a time where he had promised a few more devices from BlackBerry, especially after the deal with Foxconn. We have an update: SORRY FOR THE MISLEADING HEADLINES. TODAYONLINE HAD US CONFUSED WITH REUTERS AT THE TIME OF PUBLISHING WITH TODAYONLINE PUBLISHING MISLEADING NEWS. WE HAVE ISSUED A UPDATE HERE.

As John said that “if he cannot make money on handsets, I will not be in the handset business”. TodayOnline took only that sentence and missed out what followed: “It should be possible to  make money off shipments of as few as 10 million a year”.

Additionally, even at lower rates, Chen believes that BlackBerry can profit from its device business. This whole thing was more of a question of BlackBerry diversifying the revenue mix – not an exit from the handset business.

Finally, he had even stated to Bloomberg that he did not plan to get rid of handsets, but rather be less dependent on it for revenue.
