BlackBerry OS 7.1 – What’s New?

BlackBerry OS 7.1 has been out for quite sometime already, and it comes packed with powerful new features and innovative pre-installed applications to help you do more on your BlackBerry. Available for all BlackBerry OS 7 devices, update your device to the latest version to experience more productivity and enhanced battery life on your BlackBerry! Comparing OS 6 and 7 has shown vast improvements already and now, with OS 7.1, it brings innovation to a new high.

We had our Quick Look at the OS way back in January, and now we can take a in-depth look at the various features.

BlackBerry OS 7.1 aims to make sharing content and staying connected in or out of the office more efficient. Also, BlackBerry devices will work seamlessly together to always give you more.

Mobile Hotspot
Waiting in a coffee shop or airport but unable to find a Wi-Fi® Hotspot? Turn on Mobile Hotspot on your BlackBerry smartphone, found under Manage Connections, and create a hotspot. Then share it by connecting up to five Wi-Fi devices at once.
Pull up documents on your BlackBerry® PlayBook™ tablet while tethering it to your fully functional BlackBerry smartphone and still have three other devices connected to Mobile Hotspot at once.
*Editors Note: BIS is required for this. However, not ALL BIS can be used either. Singtel PrePaid cards may not be used for this feature.

Auto Suggest
With each key stroke you enter in your Universal Search, the auto suggest feature filters local search results and suggested Bing™ web search terms to interpret what you’re looking for and provide you with options.
*Editors Note: Whilst Bing is the default engine, since we don’t really love Bing, it is also still possible to change the engine to your own preferred one.

Battery Saving Mode
BlackBerry OS 7.1 introduces Battery Saving Mode, which automatically tweaks the settings of your BlackBerry smartphone when your battery is low.
When your battery status falls below a user set threshold, Battery Saving Mode kicks in to adjust screen display settings, like reduced backlight brightness and timing.

Device Analyzer
BlackBerry Device Analyser provides the tools you need for performing diagnostic tests on your BlackBerry smartphone. Having Wi-Fi connection issues or ever wanted to monitor your data usage? Device Analyser can be found under Advanced System Settings in the Settings menu!
Editors Note: Device Analyzer was hidden away for some reason in OS 7.1.0.523 but it can be retrieved again here.
Application Resource Monitor
BlackBerry Application Monitor provides the tools you need to monitor on your newly installed application and device performance issues on you BlackBerry Smartphone. Similarly, this can also be found in the Settings Menu.
Editors Note: Both Analyzer and Monitoring Application, will contribute to a degree of battery drain if left turned on over time. More tips and how to use the Application Resource Monitor can be found here.
